'Fishing the Wild' this weekend

A cultural window with wild fishing action in Arnhem Land

Described as "genre-busting", the new fishing documentary Fishing the Wild – Arnhem Land made its TV premiere last Sunday. The impressive documentary is on again tomorrow (Sunday October 24).

The show, which takes viewers on a journey into spectacular Arnhem Land, explores some of the world's best fishing in some of the remotest areas of Australia, where some of the oldest cultures on this planet are still in existence today.

Seven years in development, the program immerses viewers in all aspects of this mythical country, as two best mates fish, adventure, discover, and learn its secrets from traditional owners, all recorded by Australia’s top cinematographers.

The six-part television documentary is driven by the adventurous spirit of Morgan Hartney and Hamish Simpson, who set off exploring one of our planet’s last cultural and environmental strongholds.

"Morgs" and "Simmo" hunt and fish with the local Yolngu people as they explore the pristine region with only their swags, fishing rods and a tinny.

Director Hartney said Fishing the Wild was no ordinary fishing show, because Arnhem Land is no ordinary place.

"The people, environment and fishing of this incredible place demanded a new approach," Hartney said.

"To do justice to Arnhem Land, we set out to raise the bar for fishing television, with high-end production, cinematography and deep involvement with local communities.

"We wanted an authentic, emotionally compelling journey connecting viewers with the magic of this place and giving them a deeper insight and respect for the sport, the environment and its people."

Co-host and producer Simpson said part of their aim was to broaden the appeal of the fishing/adventure lifestyle.

"We wanted to immerse viewers in not just the catch – but the whole journey which inspires us to fish," Mr Simpson said.

"The rush of exploring a new area – learning about a new place, and working out how to fish it.

"The feedback we have had already has been fascinating – fishos are all over it; but also we have a whole range of people telling us they don’t even fish, but watching the show just makes them want to be out there."

Fishing the Wild screens on Sundays at 12pm on 7mate. You can view previous episodes for a limited time online or through your smart TV on plus7 at Fishing the Wild.
