According to the website www.lifeinsurancefinder.com.au, commercial fishermen and women have the most dangerous jobs in Australia.
In a recent statement, the website listed the 10 most dangerous jobs in the country and fishing edged out mining and truck driving as the most risky.
“Commercial fishing is often considered 17 times more dangerous than mining. Fishermen and women work miles away from land and often face icy cold wind, violent storms and heavy rain during the course of their shift,” said the statement.
Construction workers, tree loppers and farmers were the next three on the list. In 2008, farming would have landed you in the top three most dangerous in the world but that profession has since dropped to sixth.
Defence forces and firefighters also faced significant risk as did the final two, pilots and garbage collectors. Garbos, said the website, were: “often exposed to harsh working conditions, with a high risk of accidents and long-term damage from exposure to different toxins and chemicals”.
So we suggest that if you're a commercial fisherman in 2013, don't expect a warm greeting from your local life insurance salesman.
