Fishing features roll out for 2022 Yamaha WaveRunner range

Yamaha doesn't have a direct rival to the three-model Ski-Doo Fish Pro range, but it will let you build one

The 2022 Yamaha WaveRunner FX range will roll out with a series of clip-on modules that can transform the jet skis into a serious Sea-Doo Fish Pro rival.

While the parts are initially slated for the US market and yet to be confirmed for export, Yamaha Australia representatives have expressed interest in the revised accessories range and have added it to their wish list for 2022.

While Sea-Doo sells a choice of three factory-built fishing watercraft with all options fitted ready-to-go, Yamaha has instead opted to give customers the choice of adding components piece by piece.

It also means Yamaha customers can equip the rear deck extension – dubbed the RecDeck – on any current-generation Yamaha FX series (every new FX model sold since 2019), on supercharged or non-supercharged variants.

The recreational deck sits on top of the existing rear deck, but creates a flatter surface and extends past the rear edge of the ski.

Because the deck extension makes the craft's built-in rear-boarding foot-rail unusable, it has a ladder that tucks neatly into the bed of the RecDeck.

Pricing is yet to be announced, but based on US estimates, the RecDeck could cost close to $1500 by the time it lands in Australia, not including other add-ons such as the chair, cooler box, or brackets, that are all extra-cost options.

Aussie name going global

Interestingly, the cooler box has adopted the JetFish branding and name created by Yamaha Australia two years ago. It now appears to be going global.

Before the Sea-Doo Fish Pro arrived in 2019, the Yamaha FX series dominated the fishing jet ski market, with riders having to adapt their own locally sourced bolt-on accessories.

However, Yamaha seems to be planning to reclaim some of its lost ground with the first of what promises to be a growing list of accessories designed to appeal to fishing enthusiasts.

Jet skis can safely get into shallower water than boats when fishing and are easier to fish from in open water, especially when wrestling in a big catch.

The sport of fishing is the fastest-growing segment of the personal watercraft segment. Last week Sea-Doo unveiled three Fish Pro models for 2022.

Sea-Doo said the Fish Pro was the fastest-growing model in terms of sales in its line-up.
