Merimbula offshore artificial reef update
Here are the co-ordinates for the proposed new fishing reef on the NSW South CoastPlanning is now well underway for the new Merimbula artificial reef, with the installation expected in 2018. It will be one of five locations in NSW to receive offshore artificial reefs over the next three years.
A specific design for the reef will be subject to a government tender process but is likely to be constructed of up to 20 concrete modules measuring approximately 4-5 metres wide by 4-5 metres high and weighing up to 25 tonnes each or steel towers.
The reef will have 20 metres of safe vessel clearance above the structure. The total footprint area of the reef will be up to 320sq m and likely to spread over an area no larger than 100 by 100 metres.
DPI has been undertaking an environmental assessment of the proposed Merimbula artificial reef. The preferred site is a sandy area in 30-32 metres of water situated approximately 3km southeast of the Merimbula Lake entrance. The site is located within the ocean trawl net (fish) closed waters.
The proposed centre point of the artificial reef is 36° 54.867' S, 149° 56.251' E.
Meanwhile, fabrication of the 36 concrete reef modules for the southern Sydney offshore artificial reef is complete with installation expected to take place during September, 2017.
The creation of the five new artificial reefs in NSW waters is designed to enhance recreational fishing opportunities. There is a new artificial reef in the planning for the Tweed area as well.
