First Volvo Ocean 65 hits the water

New one-design Farr round-the-world racer launched
The Volvo Ocean Race reached a milestone this week when the first of the new one-design Volvo Ocean 65s hit the water. After a seven-month building process, the stunning new racing boat was unveiled before being handed over to Team SCA and their all-female crew.
The first of the 65-foot high-performance racing yachts to contest the next two editions of the race is finally in its element. Wearing Team SCA's colours, the boat left the Green Marine boatyard by barge on Monday (September 23).
From the pen of Farr Yacht Design and built by a consortium of four boatyards in Europe – Green Marine in the United Kingdom, Decision in Switzerland, Persico in Italy and Multiplast in France – the new boat will now undergo pull-down testing aka stress testing in which its seaworthiness under the most treacherous conditions will be scrutinised. The stunning yacht could be sailed for the first time this Wednesday.
This is the first time in the 40-year history of the Whitbread/Volvo Ocean Race that there has been a strict one-design class. The move will put the emphasis even more heavily on the quality of the sailors and their skill rather than different capabilities of the boats.
To see the high-performance Volvo Ocean 65 sailing in all its glory, we'll have to wait for the delivery sail from Southampton to SCA’s Lanzarote training base in the Canary Islands.
The sleek yacht has been designed with digital communications very much in mind and strategically placed cameras and microphones will ensure better footage than ever is sent back from the oceans by the Onboard Reporters.
“The amazing communications capabilities mean we can focus directly on the sailors and the enormous challenges they face out in the oceans,” said Volvo Ocean Race CEO Knut Frostad.
