Festival of Sails entries pass 200
Great local and interstate support for Victoria's oldest sporting eventWith less than two weeks to go until the 2016 Festival of Sails gets underway, entries continue to flood in, and recently South Australian Jamie Goode’s Farr 30 yacht Vertigo became the 200th entry in Victoria’s oldest sporting event.
Coincidentally, Vertigo was also last year’s 200th entry, which Skipper Jamie sees as a good sign.
"I really enjoyed the close competition last year, and the adrenalin rush at the big starting line-up. We had somewhat mixed results last year, so we’re back for more in 2016," said Jamie.
Mike Williams, Sailing Manager at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, says: "The Festival of Sails goes from strength to strength each year, and the uptake from sailors is the best proof of that.
"We’ve seen many local yachts enter again this year, but interstate sailors are also keen to show their boats and skills. The strongest category this year is the Cruising with Spinnaker division, currently making up 74 boats of the 200 entered.
"The Festival of Sails remains one of the most iconic regattas in the country, with exceptional sailing across Corio Bay and spectacular shore side action for the whole family," he added.
Corio Bay makes a fantastic amphitheatre and spectators line the shores to watch the action. One of the highlights is the finish of the Passage Race which takes the yachts from Melbourne to Geelong with the finish line right outside the Royal Geelong Yacht Club. The Passage Race starts in the morning of Saturday January 23 and the boats stream into Corio Bay from early afternoon.
But even if you only have a passing interest in the boats, there's plenty to see and do on the shore, food stalls, rides for the kids, markets and more for the whole of the long weekend.
