Excitement builds for Venture Cup
It's the biggest, toughest and most glamorous powerboat race in the world, and it's on in JuneOrganisers describe the Venture Cup as a multi-day, multi-country, multi-leg offshore powerboat race.
The race revisits what many consider to be the all-time greatest powerboat race which was run once before in 1972. The race will begin on June 7 in the heart of London and over the following two weeks will see the fleet of 30 ocean race boats cover 2750 miles and visit nine cities before finishing in glamorous Monte Carlo.
The course for the race will see the boats visiting the Channel Islands, Les Sable D’Orlonne, Corunna, Cascais, Puerto Banas, Majorca, Barcelona, St Tropez and then onto Monte Carlo.
Something of this scale hasn’t been attempted for over 40 years, so the organisers decided to run a low-key event in June last year to shake out any possible problems which could then be rectified before the full race in June. The event was called the Venture Cup Prologue and while it was intended to merely be a test-bed for the main event, it provided some of the greatest powerboat racing in the recent memory. Having raced hundreds of miles in horrendous seas, the teams were regularly finishing within seconds of each other.
It also proved to be a worthy test of the challenges to come as, on Day 1 alone, over 1000 impacts in excess of 10g were experienced in a raceboat fitted with specialised telemetry.
The boats are specialised custom racers measuring from nine to 17 metres and powered by engines ranging from 315 to 2700hp.
