Evoy opens global order book for 150hp electric outboard motor

Owners will need to choose between fast and slow set-ups depending on what batteries they buy

Electric outboard motor maker Evoy has opened up the books for its battery-powered Gale Force unit that will provide up to 150hp of performance.

The 150hp “peak discharge” unit – if you rely on a continuous discharge rather than a single burst of performance it will provide 120hp – launches on the global market in the next few months.

It is the first of three electric outboard motors that the Norwegian company will produce, with plans for a 300hp “Storm Force” unit launching in 2023, with a “Hurricane Force” due in 2025 and producing a heady 450kW.

The Gale Force unit will allow buyers to choose between three different-size batteries for the electric outboard, with owners also able to select between a higher-performance “power” unit providing up to 6.7nm of range at 12 knots for the smallest 23kWh battery and up to 37.6nm for the larger 70kWh one, and “Energy” batteries.

The Power batteries are heavier and more expensive than the Energy batteries, which do not allow the boat to travel as fast and take longer to recharge.

The electric outboard motor’s performance is monitored via bespoke single or twin 10-inch or 16-inch touchscreens that also comes with weather, FM and DAB digital radio, full marine navigation, Bluetooth, a wireless connection and 4G connectivity with automatic Over-the-Air updates.

Owners can also option a sounder.

Recharging the battery will be via a plug – it is still under development – that will be able to use a normal household powerpoint. Recharging will take anywhere from 30 minutes to more than 24 hours depending on the power outlet and size of the battery pack.

The electric motor will come standard with a 3.3kW charger, with 11kW and 22kW chargers available. Evoy says it will even have a 100kW charger available when the outboard motor officially goes on sale.

Evoy also builds an inboard electric propulsion system optimised for fast boats up to 50 feet in length, and producing up to 800hp with more than 50nm of range.
