Evinrude has launched a new generation of E-Tec G2 three-cylinder fuel-injected two-stroke outboard engines in 115hp HO, 140hp and 150hp ratings.
Evinrude’s parent company, Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), announced the new engine range in the US yesterday. We have yet to hear this exciting news from Evinrude’s Australian distributor, but expect an official announcement to be forthcoming.
Details of these innovative new three cylinder DFI two-stroke outboard engines have emerged on the internet over the past 24 hours, with the unofficial reveal to selected international journalists having taken place in South Carolina a month or so ago.

According to Evinrude, these break-through new models house a direct-injection 1.9-litre capacity, and an in-line three-cylinder powerhead (a first in the 150hp outboard engine class) to deliver refined running quality, effortless power throughout the rev range, along with quiet operation.
With more torque and fuel efficiency at lower rpm than comparable four-stroke engines, the new E-TEC G2 models are said to give boaters extended cruising capabilities and more power whenever it is needed.
Similar to the larger engines in the Evinrude G2 line-up, the new models are worldwide emissions compliant and have the most user-friendly ownership experience with no break-in period, no dealer-scheduled maintenance for five years or 500 hours, a five-year factory backed service/warranty coverage and no oil changes, ever.
“We are proud to continue the legacy of Evinrude innovation in 2019 and well into the future,” BRP Marine Group president Tracy Crocker said.
“By bringing the E-TEC advancements to the 115 HO, 140hp and 150hp models, some of the most popular outboard sizes on the market, we are once again delivering the pinnacle in innovation and performance that inspires confidence in each and every Evinrude owner as they pursue their life on the water.”
Key features of the new models include in-cylinder direct fuel injection (which is more efficient than systems with fuel injected into the inlet manifold); digital shift and throttle; the iTrim boat trim (an automatic trim system that is ideal for beginners); digital instrumentation, custom colour engine cowling panels; neater, cleaner transom rigging (just a single rigging tube in front of the engine); a 7.2-litre onboard oil reservoir (good for 50 to 60 running hours); freshwater flushing port; and optional iSteer dynamic power steering integrated into all G2 outboards from the 115 HO to the 300hp.
Extra features for the new engines that are yet to be confirmed for Australia include a five-year corrosion warranty, premium controls and gauges, as well as a tiller option that features “touch troll” and trim switches, LEDs for basic diagnostics and an NMEA 2000 connection for integration with external gauges and accessories.
The Evinrude 115 HO, 140hp and 150hp engines are said to weigh just 180kg. This makes the flagship 150hp motor in this trio the lightest engine in its class by a long way.
By comparison, Evinrude’s current V6 E-TEC G2 150hp weighs 225kg (lightest model), while rival four-stroke outboard engines from Mercury, Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki, weigh 206kg, 220kg, 220kg, and 236kg respectively.
In the 115hp size range the new 180kg G2 1.9-litre 115hp is marginally heavier than most of its competitors. It is also weightier than the first generation 115hp Evinrude E-TEC which tips the scales at 177kg in standard 508mm longshaft configuration.
For the record, Mercury has the lightest 115hp outboard at 163kg, followed by the Yamaha at 171kg, the Suzuki at 182kg, and the Honda at 220kg.
All three of the new three cylinder G2 Evinrude E-TECs will be available in 508mm longshaft (20-inch) and extra-longshaft (25-inch) configurations.
With the debut of the these new, smaller capacity G2 DFI two-stroke outboard engines, the Evinrude E-TEC G2 family now stretches from 115hp to 300hp, covering applications ranging from pressed alloy family runabouts through to bass and barra boats, high-performance tow-sport boats and offshore fishing craft.
