Evinrude E-TEC gains full two-stroke emissions certification in Australia

Outboard engine brand Evinrude is the first to gain full range-wide environmental certification for its two- and four-stroke products

Evinrude has received Australian emissions certification for its full range of E-TEC two-stroke engines.

Telwater, the Australian distributor for the outboard engine brand, said Evinrude had “stepped to the top of the [emissions] podium” across its range of two- and four-stroke outboard engines.

“Beating out Yamaha, Mercury and all other four-stroke outboards, the Evinrude E-TEC G2 engines produce the fewest reportable emissions and are cleaner for the environment,” Telwater said.

“Why is it important to be the most fuel efficient? The cleanest? Because we are building a future for the next generation of boaties.

“Evinrude values the importance environmental preservation for the benefit of its passionate boaters.”

Pricing for the Evinrude E-TEC range is yet to be announced.

Fuel-efficient technology

The E-TEC two-stroke outboard engine range, launched in Australia earlier this year, uses direct injection technology to precisely control the amount of fuel entering the combustion chamber. Telwater said this allowed the two-stroke outboard engines to be more fuel-efficient, producing “the least emissions than any other technology”.

Boat owners often favour two-stroke engines over four-stroke equivalents because the simpler two-stroke technology produces more torque at lower revs, helping a boat to rise up onto a plane much faster.

They also tend to have fewer moving parts, making maintenance much simpler, but have the downside of needing oil to be injected with the fuel to lubricate the moving parts inside the cylinder. On the flipside, two-stroke outboard engines struggle to peg the same fuel efficiency a their four-stroke equivalents, and can wear out faster.

Evinrude’s E-TEC G2 direct-injected outboard engine range starts with the 150 HP, a narrow-bank 2.7-litre V6 with an integrated digital shift and throttle.

At the top end, the 300HP is a narrow-bank 3.4-litre. Compared with an equivalent four-stroke outboard engine, the Evinrude is about 25kg lighter from an engine that is almost a litre more in displacement.
