Marine electric motor specialist ePropulsion has launched into Australia with a range of low-powered battery-fuelled units including a pod drive for sailboats and outboard motors for small watercraft.
Earlier this year, ePropulsion launched a range of brushless direct-drive electric outboard motors including the 3.0hp tiller- and forward-steer Spirit range that uses built-in batteries, the 6.0hp to 9.9hp Navy models that use a separate battery, and a pod drive range producing between 3.0hp and 9.9hp.
It has now chosen Melbourne – a city that ePropulsion describes as at the forefront of alternative propulsion in Australia – as its base from which to sell, service, support, repair and honour warranties on its products.
“We are very excited to launch ePropulsion AU with a team that is extremely passionate about electric propulsion,” ePropulstion chief executive and co-founder Danny Tao said.
“Electric propulsion in Australia is on the rise and we are confident that the ePropulsion AU will have great success selling and supporting the brand to this vital market.”
The Spirit motors are priced from $3500 and the Navy motors from $4600. No pricing was given for the standalone batteries needed for the Navy models.
The brand also provides compact electric motors for stand-up paddleboards and kayaks.
ePropulsion's motors stand out from the crowd as they can also recharge their battery packs using hydrogeneration – using the flow of water around the propeller to generate electricity – when a tender is towed along behind a larger vessel.
ePropulsion currently has two dealers in Australia; Queensland-based Betts Boat Electrics and Electric Marine in Victoria.
