Entries open for 2020 Sydney Hobart yacht race

Notice of race issued for the 76th Rolex Sydney Hobart, with short-handed boats added to the mix

Two-handed boats will join the annual Sydney Hobart fleet this year with the official notice of race for the 2020 event issued today.

The Boxing Day race start will also celebrate 75 years of female participation in the event.

“The 2020 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, following our incredibly successful 75th Sydney Hobart in 2019, should be one for the history books once again,” Paul Billingham, the commodore of race organiser the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, said.

“With the introduction of two-handed sailing, ahead of its inclusion in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and the celebration of 75 years of female participation in the race, there’s plenty to look forward to and plenty of reasons why this will be a huge event.”

While the Sydney Hobart organisers are confident the 628-nautical-mile race will go ahead, the COVID-19 pandemic has hit global sailing events hard, with the Sail GP travelling series – the Formula One of sailing – cancelled this year in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Meanwhile, organisers behind the 2021 America’s Cup challenge in Auckland, New Zealand, have said the event could still be undermined by the pandemic.

Organisers are hopeful that last year’s Tattersalls Cup handicap winner Ichi Ban will return, as will maxi yacht and last year’s line honours winner Comanche, which has changed hands since last year’s event.
