Elandra Yachts goes with MAN power
First of the Elandras will be powered by MAN but options will be availableLuxury motor yacht builder Elandra Yachts has selected MAN Marine turbo-diesel engines to power its first 53-foot semi-custom boat, the Elandra 5.
Elandra Managing Director Luke Durman said the decision was taken because the MAN offering best suits the performance profile of the semi-custom Elandra sports yacht hull.
The engines are MAN R6-800 six-cylinder turbo-diesel engines with common-rail fuel injection. The engines deliver up to a rated 588kW (800hp) of power and 2700Nm of torque.
"We selected the MAN R6-800s because they most closely match a range of our requirements for power, cost and support," said Durman.
"Clearly, MAN is a well-established brand in the marine industry and has a strong service record.
"The power-to-weight ratio of the engines we selected is one of the best among the many options we researched.
"More important, however, was the torque range of this engine. It peaks early – at around 1200rpm – and carries through most of the rev range. This suits the Elandra motor yacht concept well. The boat will lift on to the plane quickly, offering maximum fuel efficiency, especially in the mid-rev range of 1200rpm to 2000rpm.
"Servicing costs and accessibility were a major part of the decision. MAN’s service costs are among the lowest in the industry, ensuring that our owners gain the best value for their dollars beyond the warranty period and over the full life of their engines."
Durman said the combination of the MAN R6-800 engines and the design and weight of the Elandra 5 sports yacht will deliver peak performance of 34 to 35 knots and comfortable cruise around 29 to 30 knots.
"She will plane comfortably at 12 knots and, due to the weight distribution and shape of the hull, you won’t even feel the performance hole typically associated with getting rival boats on the plane” he said.
While the first boat will be equipped with MAN Diesel power, the Elandra 5 will also offer custom power options from Volvo, Scania, Caterpillar or MTU.
The Elandra 5 sports yacht remains on track for launch mid-year.
