Edencraft 255 Formula: The story behind that image
How did Edencraft snare such a perfect hero shot of its new Edencraft 255 Formula?It's an iconic image. It's Edencraft's all-new 255 Formula, a 7.8-metre trailerable bluewater fishing boat, engines clear of the water as it launches skyward, showing a sliver of sky between sea and hull.
But how did Edencraft capture it? Edencraft’s Michael Kakouris told boatsales the image of the Edencraft 255 Formula was one of a series taken over the Labour Day long weekend, on the way out to the shelf off Eden to hunt marlin.
Kakouris said the long weekend, part of Edencraft’s “Escape to Eden” event that it hosts each year for current and former owners, difd not always have the weather on its side.
“The sea conditions off Eden weren’t the best, but we did get one good day on the Friday,” he said. “The other days were fishable but almost unfishable.”
On the day that photo was taken, the Edencraft 255 Formula had first headed out to the far south coast fish aggregating device about 15.0 nautical miles off Eden before deciding to run out to the shelf, about another 5.0nm away.
“That 255 Formula is fitted with two 400hp outboard engines,” Kakouris said. “We were out in a 6.0-metre boat with twin 140hp outboard engines.
“We left the 255 to head back in, leaving earlier, and the 255 was still fishing. It was pretty rough conditions, and I reckon we had a 20-minute head start over the 255 coming in.
“I reckon that within about 40 minutes the 255 Formula appeared behind us and then overtook us like we were standing still – it was able to carve the chop and left us for dead.”
As it turned out, it was a successful day, with the crew on the Edencraft 255 Formula hooking up and tagging a marlin.
That photo, though? That was taken on the way out to the shelf, captured as the Edencraft 255 Formula launched off the top of a large swell on the way to the FAD.
According to Kakouris, there were many more images captured that weekend showing the Edencraft 255 Formula in its element. Those, and a video, are yet to be released.
The Edencraft 255 Formula will go on show at Agfest field days at Carrick, just south of Launceston, Tasmania, in early May before heading up to Queensland for the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show from May 23-26.
