The Canadian company aiming to mass-produce the world’s most powerful electric outboard motor says it has found someone to build it.
Vision Marine Technologies is on the cusp of launching the E-Motion 180E, a 180hp high-voltage electric outboard motor that uses a 60kWh battery to feed it.
The battery is charged overnight using an electrical outlet that is commonly available at marinas.
Once fully charged, Vision Marine Technologies estimates the battery will be able to push a 5.5-metre to 7.9-metre boat along to cover up to 60 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 17 knots – in ideal conditions.

The first new outboard motors, which will be built in Canada by McLaren Engineering, a subsidiary of electric drivetrain specialists Linamar Corporation, are due by the end of this year.
Vision Marine Technologies is developing the E-Motion 180E as a new class of high-performance marine propulsion that will provide “an unparalleled boating experience that is noiseless, odourless and smokeless”.
“Our electric outboard provides the captain with a responsiveness that is not felt with traditional gas-engined outboards.
“Electric power is more available on our waterways today than gasoline, which will only increase in years to come.”

Electric outboard makers also talk up the lower maintenance needed for their products, as they have significantly fewer moving parts than traditional combustion engines.
“Our E-Motion 180E outboard engine will save time (and) money, thus allowing our clients to enjoy more time boating,” Vision Marine Technologies said.
“Boaters will definitely appreciate that our E-Motion 180E does not require: gasket changes, oil changes, carburettor cleaning, rebuilds and maintenance schedule.”

Once it comes off the production line, the E-Motion 180E will be sold as a complete drivetrain with battery, electrical management system, throttle controls, multifunction display screen, inboard charger and the outboard motor.
The E-Motion 180E will be sold with a two-year warranty.
A pre-production version of the E-Motion 180E recently set a new speed record for an electric outboard motor of 42.58 knots.
