Dramatic MOB in Clipper race -- video

Round-the-world sailor rescued after going overboard in the North Pacific

A crew member on the Clipper Round the World race yacht Derry~Londonderry~Doire has been dramatically rescued after falling overboard during a sail change.

Although the weather was inclement and the wind blowing around 35 knots, according to the boat’s skipper Sean McCarter the crew member, Andrew Taylor, was not clipped on and slipped over the side as the yacht heeled over.

Fortunately, he was wearing a dry suit and PFD and when the crew lost sight of him he was able to deploy his personal locator beacon (PLB) which helped the navigator home in on his position.

After spending one hour and 40 minutes in the water, he was eventually hauled aboard and. according to the skipper, is “in good form.”

Skipper McCarter said that there three main factors which led to the successful rescue to Taylor and they were: first the training of the crew, second that he was wearing a dry suit which helped stave off hypothermia, and third that he was able to set of his PLB.
