Dominator launches Down Under

Local agents for stunning Italian motoryachts

With the launch of the new Dominator 640 (pictured), the eponymous Italian shipyard has taken another step towards redefining the motoryacht market, say importers Dominator Australia & NZ.

Kyle and Heather Timms and John Zadnik from Dominator Australia headed to Venice in June to witness the launch of the 640 and experience the subsequent cruising comfort first-hand.

The trio were picked up from their hotel, driven to Venice and then whisked away in a sleek water taxi to the Venice Marine Institute, where the official Dominator launch was held.

"Nearing the end of the presentation you could hear this loud thumping music coming from outside and, as the curtains opened, there she was -- the latest addition to the Dominator Fleet," recalls Heather.

"The Dominator 640 was dancing side to side in front of us. The Captain was just moving the (thruster) joystick ever so slightly and she appeared to be dancing! What a magical moment," she adds.

While the baby in the range, the 20-metre long and five-metre wide 640 represents the best of Italian-boat building, with great attention to detail, handcrafted finishes, stirring interior and exterior design, and cutting-edge big-boat systems.

The extended windshield and sleek lines of the superstructure are said to reflect the personal inspiration of the designer, Alberto Mancini, who originally hailed from the field of sports-car design.

Among the other key features are a hydraulic bimini top, or an optional carbon hardtop, manoeuvring joystick, 3G Wi-Fi-ready connections and TV in every cabin, multifunctional navigation displays and touch screens.

The cockpit features carbon-fibre shell seats overlooking the sea, while the saloon and master cabin are equipped with a home theatre system.

Power comes in the form of a pair of MAN 1200 diesel engines that during testing by the importers in Venice gave more than 30-knots top speed.

"The Captain took the boat up to 2000rpm with the twin MAN V8 1200hp engines and we were cruising along very comfortably at 25 knots. He then proceeded to go to 2300rpm, just over 30 knots, and the boat was gliding through the water effortlessly without any vibration," Heather enthuses.

"I really felt like I was part of the James Bond Movie Casino Royale, the only thing missing was Daniel Craig!" she quipped.

Meantime, Dominator lays claims to being the only European boat builder building to the R.I.N.A. (Royal Institution of Naval Architects) Certification "A" standard, with extra carbon-fibre laminates throughout the hull for rigidity, which should bode well in Australian waters.

Founded in 1999, Dominator offers a range of motoryachts including the 640, 680, 720, 780, 860 and 880. It also makes superyachts such as the 29M, 40M and larger upon request.

Dominator Australia is in negotiations to bring one of the stand-out boats from the Italian yard in Fano back Down Under. It will also have a booth at Mandurah Boat show opening October 11.
