Boaters and anglers in NSW will soon be able to flash their phones instead of fumble in their wet wallets when the General Boat Driving Licence and Vessel Registrations become fully digitised from June, 2017.
The move will see the two maritime transactions added to the My Licences digital wallet in the Service NSW app, joining the RSA/RCG Competency Card and Recreational Fishing Fee which were made available digitally in November last year.
Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said once launched the digitisation of licence types would make it easier for boaters.
"From tide times, lifejackets, fuel, to fishing tackle, there’s a lot to keep in mind when heading out on the water. Soon there will be one less item you will need to remember and as long as you have your phone you’ll have your licence," Ms Pavey said.
"Once customers renew their licence online, they’ll be able to get out on the water without having to wait for a new licence card to arrive as digital licences are updated within minutes not days."
Digital licences can be sighted just like physical licences and authorities are able to verify whether a digital licence is current or has conditions.
While users who choose to carry only a digital version of their licence must ensure their device remains charged and accessible, digital licences can be accessed on another smartphone or tablet by securely signing into the Service NSW App.
Minister for Finance, Services and Property Victor Dominello made the
point that digital licences are allow you to have your licences stored
on your phone instead of taking valuable space in your wallet.
"The
digital age has transformed processes and consumer expectations. This
announcement is testament to the Government’s commitment to removing
paperwork and ensuring policies reflect the 21st century," he said.
