Darwin trailerboaters call for VHF radio network
A detailed Government-funded review to consider a VHF marine radio network around DarwinThe NT Government is providing $36,000 to Surf Life Saving NT (SLSNT) to undertake a review to consider a VHF marine radio network on the popular waterways around Darwin, NT.
Chief Minister and Minister for Emergency Services, Adam Giles, said he was keen to see the findings in an effort to create safer boating and fishing around Darwin.
"The Government fully supports efforts to avoid preventable deaths in NT coastal waters," Mr Giles said. "Surf Life Saving NT has an aspirational vision to install a VHF marine radio network that will provide repeater coverage to all recreational boat users in the greater Darwin area."
"This has potential to enhance safety on the water and reduce the number of search-and-rescue efforts triggered by the need to launch emergency response beacons.
"The Government will consider its response to the review after it’s completed," Mr Giles added.
SLSNT chief executive Samantha Farrow said an expanded VHF marine radio network could make a significant difference to the safety of recreational boat users in the area from Dundee Beach to Point Stuart, including Melville Island.
"Unfortunately in the NT, where there is limited mobile phone and radio network coverage, activation of an EPIRB is the only method to seek assistance, even in non-life-threatening situations," Ms Farrow said.
"The Darwin-based Careflight helicopter is always tasked in response to activation of an EPIRB, however, in the case of a non-life-threatening situation this takes the NT’s main emergency response helicopter out of action, which could result in a greater tragedy."
SLSNT has approached Chris Stevens from Surf Life Saving Australia to undertake the review.
Mr Stevens is a communications expert who recently developed and installed a VHF marine radio network along the entire NSW coast.
"The review will provide SLSNT with a clear and comprehensive outline on the infrastructure needed, staging of the project, ongoing maintenance required and most importantly the cost to create an effective VHF marine radio network," Ms Farrow said.
"The review will also investigate the ideal model to ensure effective monitoring of the installed network."
