Darwin fishing survey begins
Top End anglers' catches monitored for the next 12 months following reef fish declineTop End residents are being urged to take part in a survey of recreational fishing in the greater Darwin area.
Minister for Primary Industry and Fisheries, Willem Westra van Holthe, said that the Country Liberals Government was committed to establishing the surveys to ensure greater knowledge of the NT’s most iconic pastime.
The survey kicked off on Sunday (December 1) and interviewers were gathering information from anglers at boat ramps between the Adelaide River Mouth and Dundee Beach.
“It will only take a few minutes to complete the survey with recreational anglers asked to provide basic information on what fish they caught and released, the approximate location of their fishing activities and how many people went fishing," Westra van Holthe said.
“The survey information is vital to the management of fisheries in the Top End, as it allows us to carefully monitor the fish species being targeted by anglers.
“The survey will run initially in the Darwin area, over twelve months, to focus on the key issue of reef fish stock declines. In future years, surveys will be conducted in other parts of the Territory.
“The interviewers will be easily identifiable by their shirts, cap and identification card. All information collected will be treated confidentially.
“Fishing is a popular pastime in the Territory and we need to continually update information to ensure our fisheries are managed in a sustainable manner," added Westra van Holthe.
