Yanmar is claiming the honour of powering what it says is Australia’s “biggest high speed cray boat”.
Holdfast is the newest and largest vessel in Western Australia’s Tebco Fisheries fleet. With the potential to transport more than 200 baskets (up to 62000kg) of live crayfish, the near-26m vessel is designed to “land high quality catches at times when demand and prices are high”.
In short, that means fishing in conditions that keep most other craft safely tucked up in port.
Holdfast was designed by Southerly Designs and built by Dongara Marine. It is powered by twin 20-litre Yanmar 6AYMs rated at 911hp a side.
Dongara Marine’s Rowan Warr says his company has a long relationship with Tebco Fisheries but Holdfast was the first new boat it built for them. Warr said Tebco chose Yanmar engines thanks to their simplicity and reliability in remote area use.
“They [Tebco] specified the Yanmar diesels for Holdfast. Tebco likes the simplicity of Yanmar’s mechanical control system. It is easier to service when you are miles offshore,” Rowan said.
Yanmar says its 6AYM diesel engines deliver “exceptional fuel economy and lower emissions”. It says Tebco Fisheries expects to save up to 15,000 litres of fuel a year with engine choice in the Holdfast.
The craft also features MASE2510T gensets. These power the radar and navigation systems plus other vital services such as lighting, the galley, CCTV monitoring and sonar systems.
