The cut-price Compass Compact and Navigator models were introduced as lighter and more affordable versions of Roadstar’s premium caravan range. However, Roadstar's dealer development manager Brendan Murphy said the new Compass range “wasn’t getting enough traction” in the marketplace, and have been renamed GT Sport as the new entry-level model under the Roadstar banner. The Roadstar GT Sport models unveiled at last week’s Queensland Caravan Show are “retuned’ versions of the Compass vans first seen at Melbourne Leisurefest in October.
Priced from $54,000 to $64,600, they share a similar construction to up-spec Roadstar models, including the use of Roadstar’s exclusive European-sourced MS22 sealant, but miss out on some of the premium features like Dibond body panels and glossy, handle-less cabinetry.
Murphy said the two-tier Roadstar/Compass line-up had been problematic for some dealers as well as customers.
“It’s now easier for the sales people to show them the Roadstar Vacationer and say you can have it like this in this layout, but there’s a premium, or you can have it in the GT Sport, and these are the differences,” he said.
“It makes it easier for them when discussing the differences with buyers (within the same range).”
The GT Sport range includes a 16ft 6in single axle van (previously Compass Compact),18ft 6in tandem axle (previously Navigator), and new 19ft model with rear side door and 20ft 6in family van with either double or triple bunks.
Although Roadstar is no longer using the Compass name, which was first introduced in the late-1990s, it's still possible for existing Compass owners who want to trade up to order a ‘GT Sport’ with Compass signage.
