Cockatoo Island Marine Centre approved

Dry stack for 123 boats, marina berthing, maintenance and mainland pick-ups

The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust has said it's pleased to announce that a new marine centre will be built in the Docks Precinct in the south-western corner of Sydney Harbour’s Cockatoo Island.

The Harbour Trust has approved the proposal, subject to strict conditions, in the interests of encouraging boater visitations to the island and retaining the island's traditional maritime use. This is good news for Sydney boaters.

Escape Boating Pty Ltd (trading as Cockatoo Island Marine Centre) lodged the application for a marine centre on the southern apron of Cockatoo Island. The approval is for the following:

  • Dry boat storage for up to 123 boats in two-tier, open-sided racks
  • Pontoons in the Sutherland Dock to provide marina berthing for up to 24 boats
  • Berthing for up to 8 larger boats at Sutherland Wharf
  • A bunded maintenance facility for minor maintenance of boats up to 12.2m in length
  • Free-standing structures for storage, maintenance and office space (comprising 4 shipping containers and 1 portable office)

Following consideration of submissions from the community and stakeholders, the Harbour Trust’s planning assessment found that the proposed development by the Cockatoo Island Marine Centre (CIMC) was consistent with the Harbour Trust’s Act and Plans and would not have a significant impact on the island’s heritage values or on the environment.

The conditions placed on the approval include the following requirements:

  • Occasional public access through the marine centre
  • Submission of a vessel movement plan to ensure the orderly use of adjoining waterways
  • Changes to proposed mainland pick-up points
  • Ongoing monitoring of parking management
  • Submission of an operational management plan and appropriate licensing to ensure  protection of the environment and local amenity

Cockatoo Island’s new marine centre will fulfill the objectives of the Harbour Trust’s Comprehensive Plan and the Cockatoo Island Management Plan by restoring maritime activity to the Docks Precinct in a way that is compatible with its heritage values.

With maintenance facilities, dry boat storage for up to 123 boats in two-tier racks, 24 wet berths in the Sutherland Dock and up to eight berths on Sutherland Wharf, the new marine centre is a smaller-scale operation than most other comparable marine centres in or around the harbour.

The Harbour Trust added that the new marine centre has the potential to encourage Sydney’s boat-going public to visit the island and use the new facilities.
