After five decades of success, American performance-boat builder Cobalt says its new 2012-model 273 Cuddy challenges its previous goals and is a boat with “Mediterranean glamour, style and substance.”
JD’s Boatshed had the first Cobalt 273 Cuddy in the country at this month’s Sydney International Boat Show.
With recessed driving lights, the lithe hull cut a sharp figure in the exhibition halls and reminded us of the genuine American sportsboats we used to see here in better times.
Boasting 21 degrees of deadrise, the 273 will surely slice through choppy waterways like Sydney Harbour, Moreton Bay, Port Phillip Bay, even high-tail it to nearby offshore ports.
Power comes in the form of a single 320hp V8 MerCruiser petrol inboard. In keeping with the yard’s reputation, top speed cracks the benchmark 50mph speed (44 knots).
Cobalt says it also wanted owners to enjoy the romance of a cuddy. An enclosed head is included, with 1.35m of cabin headroom around the dinette. The maximum 2.42m long (8ft) berths allow owners to stay away comfortably for the night.
“It’s perhaps the most inclusive boat Cobalt has ever built… the 273 brings roominess of interior spaces, rich textures and thoughtful appointments in the cabin, one-hand handling, and a silky ride. Genius,” claims Cobalt.
At the time of writing, JD’s Boatshed had one 273 Cuddy left in stock reduced by $10,000 to clear the way for 2013 models, which we understand aren’t much different at all. A great boat for the coming summer!
