With a 12-person capacity, stadium seating, enlarged internal cockpit and 20-degree deep-vee hull reinforced with Kevlar,
Ideal for sports boating, family flings and comfortable cruising from the Broadwater to Port Phillip Bay, the 220S packs a lot in a manageable package without overcrowding. Storage is a big part of this 22-footer's pleasure-boating formula.
There's a dedicated transom locker for your portable icebox or esky, cavernous underfloor and under console areas for wakeboard, skis, clothes and the rest of your carry-on kit, and plenty of room for personal effects at the dedicated driving station and crew seating.
That seating is a real highlight. A wide aft sun lounge graces the walkthrough transom, there’s an S-shaped co-pilot lounge with flip backrest to create a daybed, and an L-shaped lounge behind the swivel helm seat.
This surround so-called stadium seating creates a very social 22-footer and, with all your kit stowed away, you can enjoy the boat's internal volume and floor space without clutter.
Up front, a wide walk-though extends to the sharp bow with deep freeboard for keeping the kids contained, secure stainless-steel grab rails, and fully lined sub-seat storage areas. There is an anchor locker and bow scuff plate in keeping with the way we anchor our boats in Australia.
The devil or, rather, diamonds are in the details, with beautiful mouldings, hand-stitched upholstery, variable foam density in the seats, snap in carpets and a six-speaker stereo.
This first new 2017-model 220S in Australia, at the new Cobalt showroom on the Gold Coast briefly before being delivered to its keen local owner and family boater, was powered by the latest all-alloy 240hp Volvo Penta V6 with Duoprop, backed by a five-year standard warranty.
Offering V8-like grunt out of the hole, the V6 has strong mid-range acceleration and we’d anticipate top speeds approaching 50mph or mid-40 knots, with an easy 200 nautical mile plus range for weekend-long boating at high 20 knots smooth cruise.
Upgrades to this boat included dual battery switch, Rockford Fosgate stereo, saltwater package, black folding tower with bimini, LED interior accent lighting and bow and cockpit covers.
Cobalt builds its boats for comfort and the 220S is a classic bowrider ready to serve weekend pleasure boating duties, family boating flings and tow sports from its tower. The sleek sheerline, integrated swim platform and promise of tight turning ability add to the sportiness of a classic bowrider in the American builder's range.
