Almost 900 anglers, plenty of prizes, perfect weather, and high-quality fish combined to help make the 20th Anniversary Club Marine Trailer Boat Fishing Tournament a huge success.
This year, the tournament moved along the foreshore to the park adjacent the ferry terminal. It offered anglers better parking; a floating pontoon marina for easy on-water access; plenty of beach space to pull up on the shore and swim; and more room for sponsor displays and demonstrations.
With over 450 boats visiting the area, one would expect the launching ramps to be pandemonium. Not so. There are plenty of ramps in the allowed launch area and the atmosphere is such that everyone pitches in to help fellow competitors. There is no such thing as coming to this tournament and not making new friends.
The organisers said that the whole event revolves around making people feel welcome and, while there are very few anglers who can realistically aspire to the 'Champion Angler' mantle, the sheer number of species prizes and lucky draw prizes, such as Lowrance electronics and Costa sunnies, gives everyone a good chance of scoring something for their efforts.
Jack Edgar, fishing by himself in a four-metre tinny, worked very hard to convincingly win 2013 Junior Champion with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in bream; 1st and 3rd in Flathead; 2nd and 3rd in Snapper; 2nd in Tailor; and 2nd in Teraglin for a record 25 points. Runner-up Champion Junior amassing nine points from 2nd Flounder; 2nd and 3rd Kingfish; 3rd Morwong; and 3rd Tuna, was Sam Millauro, who fished with his father on their Cruisecraft.
Last year's Junior Champion, Emily Thomas, was on the board for 1st and 3rd Flounder.
In a similarly dominant fashion to Jack, and also fishing in a tinny by himself, Paul Lennon put in a huge effort to amass a healthy 17 points comprising 1st and 2nd Flathead; 1st and 2nd Luderick; and 3rd Luderick to be crowned the undisputed 2013 Champion Senior Angler. The 13 points were enough to ensure Shane Peters the 2013 runner-up Champion Angler with 2nd Bream; 1st Drummer; and 1st Snapper. Paul and Shane also amassed enough points to ensure their boats won the 2013 Champion and runner-up boats respectively.
