Morris Yachts of Bass Harbor, Maine, has announced that one of its very desirable Morris 36 day sailers is headed for Australia after an Australian visiting the US fell in love at one the American autumn boat shows.
Since it appeared a few years ago, the Morris 36 -- a classic-looking Sparkman and Stephens designed sloop -- has been hailed as one of the best-looking yachts of the 21st century.
With a narrow beam and long overhangs both fore and aft, the Morris 36 could be mistaken, at a distance, for a classic New England yacht of the 1930s. But it is designed to be both easier to sail and far less expensive to maintain than any classic old yacht.
The hull and deck materials are all space age and wood has been kept to a minimum to avoid endless varnishing. The jib is self tacking and all control lines are led back under the deck to the self-tailing winches near the skipper -- making the boat easy to sail single-handed.
An electric winch makes hoisting the large main sail a cinch.
The yacht has a small deck house and the cabin contains two berths, an enclosed head, a small galley and an electric fridge.
The cockpit features a steering position behind the mainsheet traveller, so the two cockpit seats -- both more than six feet long -- can easily accommodate a bunch of your best friends.
In the US the Morris 36 is sold without life-lines so as to keep the classic lines free of clutter.
