The V17L was also the predecessor of equally successful Haines Hunter cuddy cabins such as the 565L and 635L.
The V17L was basically adapted from the V17 runabout, itself a craft that has sold in the hundreds throughout Australia.
A sleek, sporty-looking low-profile cabin boat was created from the V17R simply by lifting the deck up several inches. The raised deck was high enough to squeeze in two full-length berths underneath with just enough headroom and a modest-sized foredeck access hatch in the forepeak.
On debut, the V17L was an instant hit. Like modern cuddy cabs, the V17L has most of the advantages of a half cabin, but very close to the deck space of a runabout -- all of which makes it versatile enough for social water skiing, a spot of fishing, or simple family cruising around the bay or harbour.
The time-proven deep-vee hull beneath the V17 is also a beauty -- one of the best 17ft monohulls ever produced in this country. The ride is very soft and dry, if a little tender.
It is also very sporting. Like most Haines Hunters, the V17 feels great to drive; it tracks straight, steers well, and has that seemingly Haines Hunter patented “grip” on the water through slalom turns.
The V17L is one of the most sought-after boats on the used boat market. If you spot a good one for sale, don’t hesitate too long because it will be snapped up before you know it.
