After 135 days at sea Gourlay, 51, is 600nm south of the Cape of Good Hope and firmly in the Roaring Forties of the Indian Ocean heading to Cape Leeuwin, WA, some 4000nm to his east.
He started his voyage on November 6 and is still on track to become the fastest Australian single-handed, non-stop and unassisted circumnavigator, however after sailing nearly 18,000nm the wear and tear of storms, calms and squalls have taken their toll on his 12.5m yacht Spirit Silver Edition. During the past three months he has made emergency repairs to rigging on the mast and mainsail.
Gourlay is trying to become the first Tasmanian and only the seventh Australian to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world. www.spiritsoloquest.com
