Chasing Spanish macks, the movie
Spanish mackerel movie features good mates, good fishing and plenty of stirring slow-motion actionOkay, it’s unashamedly a plug for marine electronics group Raymarine, but this short movie has all the right ingredients; good mates, big boats with powerful outboard engines, and just a great day’s fishing.
In Pursuit of Kings, as the video is titled, follows a team of pro fishers as they compete in the three-day Biloxi King Master tournament off Mississippi in the US. The competition targets what US anglers call kingfish, but we’d call Spanish mackerel.
The vision, smattered with backlit slow-motion footage and slow, swelling audio track, follows the Caliente Fishing Team made up of US pro anglers Arik Bergerman, Randy Keys, Dominic Malfetas, Tim Garside and Tony Cellamare as they head out on competition days.
Their ride is a US-made Yellowfin 39 Offshore, a large, extra beamy fibreglass centre console made for enduring the changeable Gulf of Mexico conditions where the competition takes place.
The Yellowfin is also wearing quad 400hp Mercury Verado supercharged inline six-cylinder outboard engines, helping the team to get out among the oil rigs where the Spanish mackerels congregate.
Good and bad
While the fishing action is hot – there’s plenty of bent rods, water boiling with baitfish, and lots of whoops and high fives as the gaff hooks a fish time and time again – not everything goes the team’s way, with the weather playing a big part in the decisions they make out on the water.
Sharks and barracouta also created a few challenges for the team.
