Carlton Mid needs you! Since Saturday November 3, Carlton Mid has been asking fishermen from across Central West New South Wales and beyond to catch Australia’s most wanted fish and win a massive cash prize which currently stands at $12,500.
Carlton Mid has created the Duke of Burrendong competition to help drive the reintroduction of native fish back into one of Australia’s most revered waterways, Burrendong Dam. For every carp caught and registered, punters will receive a $1 discount token for their next Carlton Mid carton or block purchase. So far registered carp numbers have climbed to 431.
To win the $12,500 fishermen must catch a specially-tagged carp known as The Duke of Burrendong. The bounty continues to rise each week that the Duke remains in the dam.
It’s not just keen fishermen that can help native yellowbelly, silver perch and cod re-establish their numbers in the dam. If you purchase a carton of Carlton Mid at participating bottleshops, Carlton Mid will fund one native fish back into the dam. Similarly when you’re at the pub, buy your mates a Carlton Mid as every third schooner of Carlton Mid sold will also fund a native fish into Burrendong Dam.
Carlton Mid has set a target of introducing 25,000 native fish into the dam. So far, the Carlton Mid purchased through participating outlets equates to 3,412 native fish that have been secured for release into Burrendong at the muster’s end on Australia Day.
Derek Cutting, from Carlton Mid, says: "Burrendong Dam in the state’s Central West is a mecca for fishing enthusiasts and holidaymakers. Help this waterway restore its native fish population and cast a line this summer to be in with a chance of winning thousands of dollars."
Cameron Westaway, Senior Fisheries Manager, Inland for NSW Department of Primary Industries, adds: “Waterways across the state and Australia have a growing number of carp which compete with our native fish stocks and impact on water quality. Initiatives like Carlton Mid’s Carp Muster help raise critical awareness of the issue and are a great way to get the local community actively involved with solving the problem."
Esteemed poet, author and entertainer Murray 'Muz' Hartin has also thrown his support behind the initiative by recording a video exclusively about Burrendong Dam’s plight and the competition. Watch it on You Tube and be inspired to get your fishing tackle ready!
