We saw sketches over lunch and reported on our social-media channels that a new Caribbean 40 Express Hardtop was on the cards... or at least a napkin in our hot little hands.
Our sources have proven to be right on the money, with confirmation that the first boat is in build. We now have a clearer picture of what we can expect courtesy of Sydney-based Caribbean dealer Sylvania Marina.
The new Caribbean 40 Hardtop Express will have the same layout as the flybridge sistership, with a twin-cabin accommodation plan and dual-access bathroom. But it will obviously have a lower station, with some scope for owner input and flexibility of saloon furniture.
Although essentially the same layout, the finishing and detail will be completely different to make sure that it keeps pace with the other hardtop-style sportsyachts available on the market, we’re told. Pricing will be similar to the Flybridge 40 due to the lifted interior finish.
Power will be the twin 500hp QSC Cummins that should give the boat a top speed of well over 30 knots (the flybridge boat tops out at 32 knots). There is already a 40 Hardtop Express in production that has been sold, so it is a definite go ahead now.
We're told there has been early inquiry about a 40 Hardtop Express with a tower for game fishing. That said, the boat was spawned by John Barbar, International Marine’s sales and marketing manager, who noted that many avid boaters were stepping out of their flybridge cruisers and back down into single-level sedans and sportsyachts. Presumably, the throngs of existing Caribbean owners are no different.
The Caribbean 40 — a best seller and a manageable boat to operate and maintain — is a natural for the Express treatment. The true bluewater hull and shaft drives should create a very competent offshore performer.
