A new action-thriller from Columbia Pictures titled Captain Phillips is set to debut in Australia later this year.
The movie, starring two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks, is based on the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years.
The pirates boarded the 780-foot vessel bound for Mombasa, Kenya, with humanitarian aid, when the vessel was about 300 miles off Somalia’s coast.
The 20-strong American crew overpowered the pirates and took back the control of the vessel. The Maersk Alabama’s crew members were trained to deal with pirate attacks.
But during the time of the conflict, four Somali pirates took Captain Richard Phillips as hostage and left the vessel in a lifeboat. Eventually, the four pirates with Captain Richard Phillips were adrift after running out of fuel. The rest, as they say, is history. But with a happy ending.
The film, directed by Oscar-nominee Paul Greengrass, is from a screenplay by Billy Ray based upon the book A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea by Richard Phillips (with Stephan Talty).
Captain Phillips is produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, and Michael De Luca. The Australian release date has been set for October 24.
It's hoped by many in the seafaring industry that the movie brings attention and action to what remains a serious problem for shipping, cruising, yachting and anyone else who plies international waters. Meantime, see the official trailer and teaser below.
