More than 100 mainly trailerboats, bristling with tackle, packed with pilchards, and crewed by keen anglers, will put to sea for this weekend’s 31st annual Canberra Yellowfin Tournament at Bermagui.
The otherwise sleepy fishing town on the NSW South Coast will be thronging with anglers keen to catch the biggest yellowfin tuna and the prize.
Haines Hunter is giving away a 400 Prowler with 30hp Honda outboard on trailer. It’s smaller than last year’s 520 Prowler with 90hp but a mighty prize nonetheless.
To give you some idea of the level of enthusiasm of the tuna fishers, last year’s event attracted 121 boats from 23 fishing clubs across NSW and Victoria. And that’s despite a gale warning for the weekend event.
The fishing was understandably tough, as evidenced by the winning yellowfin weighing just 26.6kg. The rough weather may have also contributed to the fact one luckless anglers had to be treated by ambulance after he was speared by a marlin.
Meanwhile, local reports centre on just a few small yellowfin in the 20kg class. Although a change in current could improve things, one only needs to land a bigger tuna that their competitors to take home the Haines Hunter prize, say organisers Canberra Game Fishing Club.

Keep your eyes on the prize, happy hunting and, as they say in the fishing game, tight lines.
