Bulls Bay boats make a charge

Price-conscious US centre-console sportfishers make a splash Down Under
You don’t use elephant guns to shoot rabbits. So it is with revered US boat-builder Pioneer, which recognises that not everyone needs a five-star bluewater sportsfisher with the works to fish the flats, bay and harbour.
Catering for the budget-conscious inshore sporting angler, the South Carolina yard is now building Bulls Bay boats for 2014 in three skiff-style centre-console designs.
Pitched at sporting anglers operating on big bays, rivers and harbours, the Bulls Bay boats haven’t the standard features of the upmarket sister ships, and they are more basic in respect of construction, but they are designed from the keel up for serious fishing all the same.
Outboard-powered, the 2104 models include 1700, 2000 and 2200. Each has generous fore and aft casting platforms, in-built fish and gear storage, and largely snag-free decks to please lure and fly casters.
The first Bulls Bay model in Australia is the 1700. While the smallest in the range, the 115hp-rated ‘skiff’ has the most appeal in our market, says astute importer David Fraser, who has already kicked plenty of goals (or touchdowns) with the Pioneer.
Pioneer Boats Sydney (.com) has a 1700 with a 115hp four-stroke Mercury outboard on single-axle Savage trailer. The rig is priced from $34,990 with a 90hp outboard.
The demo boat will be fitted up with an electric motor on the bow and some electronics, but there’s not much else other than tackle that you need for inshore lure and fly casting. Details: Shane May, 0409 838 498. See http://pioneerboatssydney.com,
