Bridge to Bridge Powerboat Classic

Some 180 raceboats, plus 'jetskis', juniors and classic craft set to race up the Hawkesbury

The Upper Hawkesbury Powerboat Club will host the 78th Bridge to Bridge Powerboat Classic along a 110km snaking stretch of the mighty river from Brooklyn to Windsor on May 4 starting at 10.00am for raceboats and 12.00pm for one-up skiboats.

From humble beginnings in 1933, the Bridge to Bridge has evolved into a powerboat racing spectacular for some 30 classes from the Superboats travelling in excess of 110mph through various outboard-, centremount- and sterndrive-configured craft to the classic vintage rigs in all their bygone race glory.

Jetskis will stage a race concurrently from Wisemans while the Juniors fang from Ebenezer to the same finish line at Windsor Marine Stadium. Maritimo has signalled its intention to compete in the Superboat category using twin 1300hp engines and may well blow away the race record.

From the inaugural event win in 3 hours and 25 minutes by the late Cec Hall aboard a 1912 four-cylinder-powered Cadillac motorboat called Glenelg, today’s record of 29 minutes and 47 seconds is held by Ricky Howard in his Superclass hydroplane Hyperactive. (You can check out his record breaking run on the video below).

The Bridge to Bridge Powerboat Classic is the original race carrying this name, with the Bridge to Bridge in November each year reserved for two-up ski racing. The latter is a bigger event, although the Powerboat Classic is more of a spectacular attracting around 180 diverse boats each year.
