BOM releases new boating-weather vids
Spotlight on marine weather safety over the holidaysThe Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) launched two new videos on Monday (December 21) as part of a marine weather-safety campaign targeting recreational boaters and fishers over the peak summer holiday period.
The Bureau’s National Manager of Marine Weather Services, Neal Moodie, said checking the weather before heading to the water would help people make the safest decision on where to go or when to come home.
"Many people may not be aware that the Bureau provides information tailored for marine users – and this is something we’re keen to address. The Bureau’s weather forecasting services are monitored 24/7 by forecasting staff, and represent the most comprehensive and current information available.
"Anyone planning activities on the water should make the Bureau’s website their first port of call. The videos highlight the five vital weather safety checks to focus on when checking the forecast.
"Marine forecasts include wind, weather, sea and swell information, and describe how these conditions are likely to change during the day. Marine warnings advise fishers and boaters of impending dangerous conditions they might encounter out on the water, and this intelligence can help them make the right choice to avoid these conditions," Mr Moodie said.
The Bureau recently completed a major upgrade of its forecasting services, which includes graphical forecasts through its online MetEye tool.
"Boaters and fishers can see animated wave and wind forecasts for any location in Australia, including its surrounding coastal waters, to assist in planning their activities when conditions are favourable.
"Marine forecasts, tide predictions and warnings are an invaluable resource for recreational activities on the ocean, coastal waterways, bays and harbours, and play a vital role in supporting search and rescue operations in the event of an incident.
"Tide predictions are also important, particularly when launching and retrieving boats from exposed ramps and for safe navigation through waterways and river mouths," he said.
With Australia’s most famous yacht race – Rolex Sydney to Hobart – kicking off at the end of the week there’s never been a better time to learn about all things marine weather!
The video recommends that, before heading out on the water, boaters check for:

>> Weather conditions affecting safe navigation and comfort
>> Wind conditions
>> Wave conditions
>> Tide predictions.
