A versatile powered catamaran gonged as the 2021 Multihull of the Year is perfect for exploring Australia

Aquila has long been a name associated with great liveaboard catamarans built to go places and generate fun.

The Aquila formula differs from monohulled liveaboard boats by having a twin-hull structure that allows a generous beam for its length.

With the 54 Yacht power catamaran, the Aquila team has produced a 16.5-metre boat that takes full advantage of the 7.68-metre beam to create a large internal living space that in some instances betters that of rival boats.

That includes sleeping space, with spaces accommodating anywhere from six people in three double cabins to seven people in four cabins, or nine people across five cabins.

One of the features of the saloon space on the Aquila 54 is a full-size fridge in the galley.

The Aquila 54 includes a “sky lounge” flybridge – accessible from the bow deck as well as the aft cockpit – that is either open to the elements under a fibreglass hardtop or fully enclosed and air-conditioned. It also has a helm station.

The flybridge space contains plenty of lounging space as well as a dinette for up to nine people, a wet bar with sink, and a dedicated liferaft locker.

The wide, open saloon space downstairs from the flybridge includes panoramic windows that flood the space with natural light, with opening sections to allow cross-ventilation.

Its saloon dinette can seat up to eight people comfortably. Aft of the saloon is the galley, with a full-size double door fridge and freezer, a central island bench and ample storage.

Powering the Aquila 54 is a pair of 380hp Volvo Penta D6 diesel engines turning shafts via a V-drive transmission. The engines are linked to a 4.0-inch Volvo Penta electronic vessel control

Prices for the Aquila 54 start from around $3 million depending on the number of options fitted to the boat.

Aquila boats are sold in Australia via Aquila Australia based at Pyrmont in Sydney, and Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast.
