Boating Warning: Bateman's Bay Bridge closed

If your boat has a mast, outriggers or flying bridge then the upper Clyde River is off limits for three months...

Boat owners with vessels moored around Batemans Bay bridge are reminded the bridge will remain closed to large marine traffic for three months from next Monday (June 6, 2016) for essential maintenance work on the opening system.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the NSW Government allocated $2.7 million to upgrade the bridge’s opening system to ensure its ongoing reliable operation.

"The mechanical and electrical system of the bridge’s lift span will be completely replaced, which will require the bridge to remain closed to large marine traffic for three months from next week until early September," the spokesperson said.

"Roads and Maritime has been consulting with the local boating community including charter operators for a number of months to ensure they are aware of this closure.

"Like many bridges in the region, Batemans Bay bridge is able to open and shut to accommodate large marine traffic.

"Work carried out will improve the reliability of the lift span and reduce potential delays to both road and water traffic caused by incidents involving operation of the lift span."

Local vessel owners have been informed of the temporary closure well in advance, giving them an opportunity to move their boats.

"Early discussions with local boat owners identified planning work for this time of year would be most convenient to the boating community," the spokesperson said.

The bridge will retain the maximum height clearance of 3.6 metres from 6am on Monday June 6 to 6pm on Friday September 9.

Vessel operators should exercise extreme caution when navigating near the bridge due to the height restriction and a work vessel which will be situated under the bridge during work.

Motorists are also advised of changes, with work on the bridge to be carried out between Sunday and Thursday night from 7pm to 5am until late September.
