A Personal Watercraft (PWC) explosion on Lake Eppalock at the weekend serves as a reminder to operators to take extra care with petrol engines.
The operator sustained serious injuries and required surgery as a result of the blast, which occurred when the vessel was started. The watercraft was also severely damaged.
Although PWC fires are a rare occurrence, this incident is a reminder of how volatile petrol engines can be.
Transport Safety Victoria (TSV) strongly advise all PWC owners to ensure that their vessel's fuel and electrical systems are kept in good condition and are serviced regularly by a reputable person.
When refueling:
• Avoid overfilling
• Clean up any spills immediately
• Check for fumes before restarting your vessel. If fumes are detected, ventilate engine compartments for several minutes before restarting the engine.
