Boating rules a focus at Melbourne Boat Show

Victorians to be reminded of the differences between NSW and Vic regulations

Victorians who go boating on the Murray River will be targeted by NSW Roads and Maritime Services at the Melbourne International Boat Show from June 12 to 16.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said Roads and Maritime would once again be attending the annual boat show in Melbourne, providing safe boating advice and information on lifejackets.

"Boating Safety Officers and Boating Education Officers will operate the Roads and Maritime display near the entrance to Pavilion A at booth eight," the spokesperson said.

"While the tenets of safe boating are consistent wherever you go in Australia, New South Wales has some State-based regulations which vary in detail from those in Victoria, including differences in the requirements for when a lifejacket is required to be worn.

"The majority of boaters on the Murray River are from Victoria and yet the river is patrolled by Roads and Maritime, the NSW based boating regulator.

"The best advice is to err on the side of safety and always wear a lifejacket," the spokesperson said.

People who visit the Roads and Maritime stand can access online services including registration and licensing. There will also be interactive elements, including a safe boating quiz with entries to go in a draw to win a safe boating pack with two new lifejackets and an EPIRB as well as give aways for children.
