The Boating Industry Association has named Neil Pratchett to the new role of policy and advocacy general manager.
He will be tasked with numerous roles including acting as a link between government and the boating industry, encouraging more people to take part in recreational boating, and fostering careers in the industry.

His role was created in the wake of the BIA releasing a new five-year business plan mapping out its future.
BIA president Darren Vaux said Pratchett was passionate about boating and had considerable professional maritime experience spanning both private and public sectors.
“Neil has more than 45 years of practical experience in recreational boating across paddle, power and sail,” Vaux said. “He has cruised and raced boats inshore and offshore, including internationally.
“He also has more than 25 years of senior-level experience in government spanning regulatory, policy, strategic, advocacy and operational roles including being directly involved in advocating for and promoting a culture of safe, responsible and enjoyable boating, as well as promoting access through improved maritime infrastructure.”
Vaux said the BIA’s five-year plan had identified “a substantial opportunity” for the lobby group to step up its advocacy for members.
“Our search for the right candidate was spread far and wide, and the calibre of
applicants was excellent,” Vaux said.
“The review committee combined with an external appraisal of candidates indicated that Neil was a standout for the position.”
Vaux was appointed president of the BIA in June after Alan Blake stood down after a six-year term in the role, and as a director of the industry association for nine years.
Vaux is a longstanding independent director of the BIA. He has also served in roles for the BIA NSW, Boating Industries Alliance Australia, Marina Industry Association of NSW, Marina Industries Association, and the NSW Maritime Advisory Council.
Vaux is also a member of the Board of the International Council of Marine Industry Associations.
