Boaters told to keep away from whales

Gold Coast boaters in the path of migrating whales
Trevor Long, the director of marine sciences at Sea World, has warned recreational boaters on the Gold Coast that they’re getting too close to migrating whales.
Boaters should not go within 100 metres of whales, or 300 metres if there are more than three vessels in the area. He says boaters need to stick to the rules.
"We've got probably 15,000 to 16,000 animals. That means there's around about 1500 to 1600 new babies with their mums,” the ABC reported Long as saying.
"The babies are very inexperienced. They don't understand boats, mums are very, very protective of their young.
"These animals move at around about three to four knots," Long said, adding that there have been some near misses and the whales could easily surface right underneath a boat.
Sea World took the photo for this story and runs a commercial whale-watching business on the Gold Coast. It's web site promotes "exciting close encounters" with whales. Presumably, not too close.
