Boat vandals could have been caught

Gold Coast-based technology company, Pivotel Group, said the drunken youths who stole and vandalised an $80,000 boat last month could have been caught before they crashed, with low-cost satellite tracking technology

The company's device named TracerTrak, enables boat owners to monitor the behaviour of their boat via the internet.

The asset tracking device can also send an alarm via SMS and email when the boat leaves pre-defined geographical zones.

Pivotel said that last month, four drunken youths stole a 9m Sea Cat from Runaway Bay Marina before crashing and torching the boat in a canal at Biggera Waters some four hours later.

Pivotel Group managing director, Peter Bolger, said if a TracerTrak had been installed in the Sea Cat, the criminals could have been caught before they had damaged the vessel.

"It is a lowly act by these kids, but boat theft is not uncommon," said Bolger.

"If a TracerTrak had been installed and the satellite boundaries had been set by the user to include only the marina, then as soon as the boat had left the marina, the owner or security company would have been notified straight away.

"It would also mean that the owner could have followed the boat on the web map, so police could have been alerted and intervened," Bolger said.
