Boaters will get a much closer look at a number of Australian boat ramps even before they jump in the car, with bespoke images and ratings now available inside Google Maps.
The “Ramp Rater” initiative was set up for NRMA Insurance by advertising and marketing group Thinkerbell. It uses Google’s Street View technology to provide detailed photos of boat ramps, as well as a rating that indicates how difficult it is to launch or retrieve a boat.
The plan is to roll the service out to cover boat ramps Australia-wide.
According to Thinkerbell, Ramp Rater is NRMA Insurance’s first-ever boat campaign, aimed at “encouraging Australians to protect their vessels both on and off the water, anywhere in Australia”.
“Reversing a boat down the ramp can be a daunting experience, which could go wrong at any time,” Thinkerbell spokesman Jim Ingram said.
“With a little bit of preparation and the added advantage of Ramp Rater, boat owners can rest assured knowing that they’re covered for every boat ramp in Australia,” Ingram said.
To date, the ramp rating system has rolled out to around 40 boat ramps in NSW and southern Queensland.
The service links back to NRMA’s website, which provides a brief description of the good and bad points about a few of the boat ramps featured on Google Maps.
