Queensland’s fishing police are selling off a powered catmaran seized after a repeat offender was caught black market fishing yet again.
The boat, a South African-built Ebbtide Marine Kosi Cat 16 "forward cabin" named Fishful Thinking, and the trailer it rides on are being sold at auction by Fisheries Queensland.
The boat, currently sitting at Eagle Farm, is fitted with twin 50hp Suzuki four-stroke outboard engines with 255 hours showing.
According to Fisheries Queensland, the half-cabin vessel, now unregistered, was seized in the wake of a court case that generated fines of almost $20,000.
“A fisher who committed repeated black marketing offences was fined $5000 and had their vessel forfeited, and a co-defendant and buyer of the fish was fined $14,225,” Fisheries Queensland said.
“Proceeds from the sale of the seized vessel will be used for future fisheries compliance through education and enforcement.”
The auction closes on November 3, 2021. A spokesman for auctioneers Mannheim said the boat had already attracted a number of inquiries within 20 minutes of the auction going live today.
The fibreglass Kosi Cat 16 measures 5.0 metres long with a 1.91-metre beam. Its hull alone weighs 550kg dry.
Ebbtide Marine is a family-owned boat builder based in Durban, South Africa.
