The largest privately-owned floating marina on Sydney Harbour, comprising of 187 berths each with their own power and water, is about to get bigger (artist's impression hereabouts). With development approval, construction starts next month on what will be a reconfigured marina with 201 berths with markedly different sizes.
The new section of the marina will boast three 45-metre and two 40-metre berths (with 125-amp power); four 24-metre, two 20-metre and five 16-metre berths; and 14 18-metre berths.
"There's very little inquiry for 10-metre and under berths. People in that market must be struggling or prefer to keep their boats on moorings. But there's a waiting list for bigger berths due to the fact boat-buyers and upsizing these days," explained Phil McGowen, the manager of Birkenhead Point Marina.
In addition, a new fuel wharf is being built on the eastern arm, with onshore tankage for 70,000 litres of diesel and 40,000 litres of premium unleaded. There will be a floating marina office nearby selling general goods, cold drinks, and so on.
Aldi is moving into the space previously occupied by boat dealers. Some dozen new small offices will be built for marine trades and traders, along with new bathrooms and suites where a family can spruce up, plus a laundry and tenant's room with internet and Foxtel. The marina also has kayak storage.
Birkenhead Point Marina is located at the entrance to Iron Cove Bay and adjacent to the Parramatta River, in a No Wash Zone, and is only 10 minutes by road or water to the Sydney CBD and an easy 30 minutes cruising to Sydney Heads.
Unique from any other marina on Sydney Harbour, it adjoins a refurbished shopping and outlet centre with Coles, a liquor store, butcher, seafood, bakery and green grocer at your doorstep, not to mention a food court and quality restaurants and cafes throughout the centre. It's a great place to provision.
By the end of 2013, the marina is expected to be complete. Expressions of interest will be accepted for the new larger berths but inquiry levels are already very high.
