In its recent state budget, the WA Government pledged $300,000 over the next two years towards the release of more Pink Snapper fingerlings into Cockburn Sound in Perth.
This is fantastic news that builds on the Snapper Guardian project funded by the public and initiated by angling body Recfishwest.
After being inundated with community support, which saw the local angling fraternity oversubscribe to a crowd-funded release of more than 100,000 Pink Snapper into Perth’s local waters in early 2016, Recfishwest is delighted to secure Government funding.
"People stood up and made a pledge to chip in towards a solution, and it’s great to see the government throw their support behind this initiative," Recfishwest said.
The government contribution will allow on-ground activities to focus directly on maintaining and protecting health fish stocks to support better fishing, Recfishwest says. It will also provide opportunities for the community to get involved.
Recfishwest is also in ongoing discussion with authorities to ensure rapid response protocols are established to safeguard the health of important waterways around Perth.
