Big boats for Monaco

Recession? What recession?

If you reckon there are some big boats displayed at the boat shows around this country each year, perhaps it would be best if you by-passed Monaco next week.

The 2011 Monaco Yacht Show kicks off at Port Hercule on September 21 and there will be no less than 100 super yachts, ranging from 25 to 90 metres, on display -- along with 400 other exhibitors.

One of the largest yachts on display will be the 85.6m (281ft) Cakewalk from the Derecktor Shipyards, the largest private yacht ever built in the U.S. She was launched last year and first displayed at the Fort Lauderdale show earlier this year. If money if no problem, she can be yours for just over 152 million Euros (about $210 million of our folding stuff).

If that is a bit outside your budget, you could go for a second-hand vessel such as the 66.7m (219ft) Triple Seven. Five years after she was launched by Nobiskrug, the yacht -- which has the numeral seven incorporated throughout her design -- is for sale for just 55 million Euros (about $75 million).

Perhaps the prettiest mega yacht on display will be the 65m Benetti, Nataly, which is the first yacht the yard has built with a plumb bow. She was commissioned by one of the Italian yard's long-term customers, but he sold her to a mate before she was launched.

Others that will have the crowds enthralled include the 85m Seven Seas from the Oceanco yard. Launched last November she is rumoured to be owned by movie director Stephen Spielberg -- probably because her saloon area can be turned into a movie theatre with a 5.5m wide screen.

If you are planning to tour the remote regions of South America, perhaps Pegaso would appeal. This expedition-style yacht (a mere 73m or 242ft long) was built by the Spanish Freire Shipyard for an owner who plans to host scientific expeditions. The yacht carries its own submarine.

Almost all the 100 super yachts on display are part-time charter vessels but it is heart-breaking just to ask what the weekly rates are. And remember, the charter fee doesn’t include booze, fuel or the expected 20 per cent tip for the captain and crew.

Tickets to the show are only Euro 65.
