That's not unusual but in the meantime Whitworth and his friend Peter Crozier have also competed in the Rolex Fastnet Race in the UK - again not unusual - but these guys did it on the same boat, sailing it to and from the events and that is an extraordinary achievement.
After a 10 hour cruise with light to no breeze up the Derwent, Berrimilla finally finished at 3:54pm on News Years Eve. They received a huge welcome at Constitution Dock. Whitworth and Crozier, both in their early 60s, have sailed more than 30,000 miles in the modest 33-foot cruiser. They arrived back in Sydney on December 20 with only a few days to prepare for this year's race. Their adventures have been followed by many through the logs on www.berrimilla.com. This will continue to be updated at least until Berrimilla returns to Sydney.
Berrimilla was the second last boat to finish the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The ACT training yacht Gillawa is the last remaining yacht at sea of the original fleet of 85 that left Sydney on Boxing Day.
Gillawa is set to beat her time in last year's race, when she finished at 7.33am on January 3 after sheltering from gales.
In this year's race there have been 79 finishers and five retirements, the last, Nevenka, giving up for lack of breeze. www.rolexsydneyhobart.com
